Minutes per quarterly update
Median time for a typical client, by MTD client band. Groups of 5–9 firms would be labelled preliminary in a live report.
On-time filing
Share of quarterly updates filed by the HMRC deadline, overall and by firm type (illustrative).
| Segment | Filed on time | Firm IDs (band) | Label |
|---|---|---|---|
| All firms | 89% | 25+ | — |
| Accountants | 91% | 10–24 | — |
| Bookkeepers | 86% | 10–24 | — |
| Tax advisers | 88% | 5–9 | Preliminary |
Software — agent-reported failure rates
Not conclusive at small n. Figures below are agent-reported and unverified. A comparison based on five firms is directional only — not a verified software fault. Vendors have a right of reply via [email protected].
Issue Board (sample)
Listed only when at least 5 firms report the same problem. A report is not a confirmed defect.
| Issue (normalised) | Firms reporting | First / last seen (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|
| Agent auth / credential refresh loop | 5–9 | Wave window |
| Property income mapping mismatch | 5–9 | Wave window |
| HMRC timeout on bulk submit | 10–24 | Wave window |
What a practice might do with this
- Staffing: if your minutes per update sit above the middle 50% for your size band, compare process (who prepares, who reviews) rather than assuming software is the only lever.
- Software: treat failure-rate gaps as prompts to ask vendors and peers — not as a ranking to switch on. At preliminary n, wait for a later wave.
- Fees: historic fee medians are context only. MTD Pulse does not recommend prices.
- Readiness: a low MTD-ready share relative to peers may flag client onboarding work before the next deadline.
Limitations (always shown)
- Self-selected contributors; not a census of UK practices.
- “n” is distinct Firm IDs after cleaning — not independently verified legal entities. Open visitors can receive a new random ID per visit.
- Small cells (5–9) are preliminary; software comparisons at n = 5 are not conclusive.
- Failure rates are agent-reported and unverified; vendors may reply.
- Unusual responses without a contact email are excluded rather than queried.
- Fees are historic (already charged) and rounded; no price recommendations.
